Cleo

The yellow bird you see is named Cleo. She is a female Turquoisine parrot who lives here and is 100% free. She always has everything she needs: fresh water, a fountain, food, seeds, and several perches. She has a very curious personality and loves to go to the window to watch passersby, bask in the sun, or chew on plants. She never gets bored! She thrives well and we love her very much. We visit her several times a day, even when the shop is closed.

She has been with us since November 2023 and is free at all times because she has a rather calm demeanor. In a cage, even just at night, she would have night terrors and hates complete darkness. Being free, she is happy to be active from the first rays of sun.

The Turquoisine Parrot

A Turquoisine parrot is a very early bird, cheerful, curious, and independent. It is a flying bird, so it loves to fly. Kept permanently in a cage, it becomes very unhappy and depressed, like many birds. A depressed bird becomes fearful and stops playing, grooming, interacting, and eating.

Being independent and rather solitary, the Turquoisine parrot generally does not seek the company of other bird species or humans. It is not an affectionate or very playful bird. It prefers to spend its time lounging in the sun, grooming itself, nibbling, and foraging among plants.

However, Cleo is special: she is very curious about humans and likes to be in our company. She loves to come on our shoulder and give kisses. And, although Turquoisine parrots are known to be quiet, Cleo responds when spoken to and is very expressive. She truly has a beautiful personality; we are lucky to have found her by chance.

Diet

The basic diet for birds consists of seed mixes specific to each species, but it is believed that for a healthy bird, variety is essential. Here, seeds are secondary, and the diet is mainly kale, spinach, almonds, basil, fennel, asparagus, dried worms, egg food, as well as corn on the cob and millet as treats.

Adopting a Bird

The birds in the shop are neither a marketing tactic nor an incentive for people to adopt birds. Raising a bird can be a long and arduous task, requiring time, patience, and adaptation, like any other animal. Adopting a bird also means letting it roam freely for most of the day, so space must be planned accordingly.

Before moving forward with a potential adoption, consider if you are ready for this adventure, which will last between 10 to 18 years for small birds, and will require a lot of management and care.

Birds, small and large, have an extraordinary capacity for learning. When they receive a lot of attention and care, they become incomparable life companions. However, when they are not raised in a context conducive to their development, they can develop behavioral problems, and it is very difficult to rehabilitate them afterwards.

Also, research which species would suit you best, as they are all different. This will depend on your level of tolerance and your abilities. Go meet breeders and do not rush to adopt. There are also excellent forums on social media for any questions regarding different species and for general questions.

An exotic bird like Cleo has not been taken from its natural environment, an act that is totally cruel. These are farmed birds and have been domesticated for generations, like cats and dogs. Their happiness depends on their living context and their care.
